What is a coach house?

The coach house was originally used as a separate building on an estate to store a carriage (or coach) from the horse and carriage. Nowadays of course we no longer need to store our carriages, but we may need some extra space - for our in-laws, visitors, or as a mortgage helper.


Hence the evolution of coach houses, also known as carriage or laneway houses, which are growing in popularity throughout the Lower Mainland. They are being built as secondary legal suites belonging to - but separate from - the main house. In Langley and Surrey, coach homes are usually built above a detached garage.


The RF-9S Zone currently permits either one secondary suite or one coach house - but not both - on any lot.



The Clayton Area


Clayton is a booming area in Cloverdale, which borders Langley on the eastern side of Surrey, and it is still expanding and developing, despite it having the air of being an established neighbourhood.
